Dr. Pelphrey received his Doctor of Dental Medicine Degree from the University Of Louisville School Of Dentistry in 1988 during which time he was awarded the American Society of Dentistry for Children Award for excellence in Pediatric Dentistry as an undergraduate. He then completed a 2 year Pediatric Dental Residency at the University of Kentucky in 1990.
Dr. Pelphrey practiced in Richmond Virginia and Cincinnati Ohio before opening his office in Pikeville Kentucky in 1993.
Dr. Pelphrey achieved Diplomat status with the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry in 1999 and holds the distinction of being the only Board Certified Pediatric Dentist in Pike County.
He is a member of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, American Academy of Pediatrics, American Dental Society, American Society of Sports Dentistry, Kentucky Dental Society, Kentucky Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and the Kentucky Mountain Dental Society.
Dr. Pelphrey attends numerous continuing education seminars yearly which enable him to provide the latest in Pediatric Dental care for his patients. Dr. Pelphrey also gives a variety of lectures throughout the community and to dental meetings. Some of those topics include Pediatric Dentistry Reviews, Sports Dentistry and Dental Trauma, and Preventing Abuse and Neglect through Dental Awareness.
Dr. Pelphrey is very involved with his community and has served on the Board of several Eastern Kentucky agencies such as Mountain Comprehensive Care, Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Eastern Kentucky, Jenny Wiley Theatre and Pike County Headstart.
Dr. Pelphrey has a professional experience in treating the dental needs of special needs patients such as Down Syndrome, Spina Bifida, Cleft Lip and Cleft Palate, Autism, Cerebral Palsy, Mental Retardation, Leukemia, Hemophilia, Cystic Fibrosis and a variety of other medical/developmental problems that effect the pediatric population. Dr. Pelphrey has a special interest in treating Nursing Bottle Tooth Decay and treatment of patients under sedation or in the hospital setting under general anesthesia as well as the treatment of dental trauma.
In his spare time, Dr. Pelphrey enjoys traveling, gardening, antiquing and collecting, reading, writing poetry, cooking, Kentucky Wildcat basketball and spending time with his family and his dog Lincoln.
