Care of the Mouth After Restorative Treatment

1) After your child’s restorative treatment it is normal for the tooth to feel different or “funny”. This is a result of the anesthesia administered to make the procedure comfortable for your child during treatment. This feeling will wear off within 30-45 minutes. It is important that you monitor your child and do not allow them to pinch or bite on the numb area as this will cause injury.

2) Keep the treatment area very clean. Resume brushing and flossing as usual.

3) It is sometimes normal for the tooth or teeth to be sensitive after dental treatment. Any prolonged pain or discomfort should be reported to the doctor.

4) The child may resume a normal diet as soon as it can be tolerated. With silver crowns, it is important that the child not eat for at least 30 minutes after treatment.

5) It is sometimes normal for there to be some mild bleeding or mild swelling around the tooth that has been treated. This will subside quickly.

6) Remember with silver crowns, sticky, chewy and tacky candy and foods can cause the crown to come off. It is best to refrain from or limit their consumption. If a crown should come off, save the crown and call the office during regular office hours.

7) Please report any unusual problems to the office promptly.
